woah now hold up, i think people are getting a little confused.

i can’t actually find confirmation anywhere that disney are physically shutting down any of their 2d animation studios. hell, they’re looking specifically for 2d animation interns, which means that 2d is not gone for good. this has happened before, as mentioned in the john lasseter quote - really all this means is that they currently don’t have any 2d animated films in their line up, it doesn’t mean that there will never be anymore 2d features. disney chief exec bob iger said “we’re not necessarily ruling out the possibility [of] a feature but there isn’t any in development at the company at the moment.”

similarly, disney is working to develop the technology used on paperman, which is made using their in-house animation program called ‘meander’. it involves 2d animators drawing directly over the 3d animated frames, and the combination of the two give that distinct look achieved in the paperman short. however, we don’t know how efficient this program is to use - it’s one thing to produce and animated short, another entirely to produce an animated feature. it might be that there’s still some software tweaking required before it can be used for a feature length production.

tldr; just because there’s nothing currently lined up it doesn’t mean 2d is done for good - chill out!
